Top 40 Songs of 2012: Blur – Under the Westway

#Top40Songs2012 by Sam Skilton
The Westway, part of the A40, is road elevated on a mass concrete structure above the streets of London. It has featured in Blur songs before, but none quite as prominently as this. Released as a double single alongside ‘The Puritan’ ahead of the band’s incredible Hyde Park live show to celebrate the closing of the Olympic Games, Damon Albarn’s spine tingling vocals nestle elegantly on its hypnotic piano rhythm. It is enough to reduce grown men to tears, and it proved a truly unforgettable moment for 80,000 people on the warm mid-August evening for which it was written.
Released: 02 July 2012
